HOW A MEDICAL MICRODERMABRASION WORKS
Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin in an effective and controlled
manner. It is a gentle way of making real improvements without having
down time. When performed in conjunction with a topical chemical acid
treatment, the effects, as well as the long term benefits, are much
increased.
A
medical microdermabrasion treatment helps improve hyperpigmentation,
mild scarring, fine lines, pore size and aids in resurface aging/sun
damaged skin. The corneocyte cohesion reduces, and the stratum corneum
becomes compact and organized. The treatment allows some of the dryness
associated with maturing skin to be controlled by removing dry, dead
cells while providing additional smoothness. Reducing the thickness of
the corneum and abnormal cell development will help increase normal cell
turnover, allowing patients to enjoy smoother, more youthful skin. When
the epidermis does not function properly the melanin pigment cannot be
shed in its usual organized manner. A regular medical-micro treatment
helps to regulate pigment.
The types of results that may be expected with a
medical-micro are that acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and fine lines
will be erased or will significantly improve in appearance. Active acne,
both moderate and severe can be controlled as well with a medical-micro
and proper, diligent home care and maintenance. On anti-aging patients
there may be a noticeable difference as soon as the first treatment:
skin will be smoother, softer, and feel tighter, and any scarring and
hyperpigmentation will be slightly diminished. More dramatic results
will become more obvious as the treatment series continues.
The average length of and initial series is 6
treatments. It is ideal to have a treatment every 1-2 weeks. However,
since treatment results vary for individuals, some may need a longer
series to achieve desired results.
The skincare technician should recommend a complete
maintenance program, including medica-micro treatments and an at-home
skincare regimen. After the initial series of treatments, set up a
maintenance schedule, ideally having a treatment every 1-2 weeks (acne
patients should come in every week until the skin is clear). Variation
in schedule can be based on many factors, all of which need to be taken
into consideration when suggesting a maintenance program.
- Patient's skin needs (extent of damage, condition, skin type and maintenance)
- Patient's motivation
- Patient's time commitment and/or constraints
- Patient's finances
